Treat Your Dental Cavity with Perfect Preventive Care
Article07. 01. 2019
If you take care of your teeth properly, dental caries and gingivitis can be avoided effectively. In addition to caring for your teeth at home, do not forget to pay a visit to a dental hygienist and undergo frequent preventive examinations at your dentist.
Dental hygiene
Visiting a dental hygienist is becoming a normal part of a healthy lifestyle. To remove dental plaque, tartar and any unwanted pigmentation caused by tea, coffee and wine, dental hygienist Mahulena Stoklasová, DiS., uses the following while doing her job:
- Ultrasound
- Manual dental devices
- Air-flow, otherwise known as sandblasting where special type of sand particles are propelled at speed to clean and polish the teeth surface
- Polishing teeth with a special brush and polishing paste
A visit to a dental hygienist results in the removal of all unwanted layers of coating from our teeth. According to Mahulena Stoklasová, the result is that the overall bacterial presence is reduced. This in turns leads to limiting the occurrence of dental caries, gingivitis and periodontitis which can cause premature loss of teeth.
“During a visit to a dental hygienist, each patient should be informed about what effects tartar and dental plaque has on the condition of the oral cavity. At the end, the hygienist can help the patient choose devices and tools to clean teeth and provide instruction on how to do so correctly” explains dental hygienist Stoklasová.
Dental hygiene should be repeated once every six months.

Preventive dental examinations
You should definitely visit a dentist even if you currently do not experience any apparent problems. Mahulena Stoklasová suggests that both adults and children should undergo a preventive dental examination once every six months.
As part of the examination, a dentist checks the overall health condition of the dental cavity. Should dental carries or other procedures require it; the patient will be invited for follow-up care. A preventive dental examination is not to be confused with cleaning the teeth; this is something that a dental hygienist carries out instead.

The importance of home care
Perhaps even more important than dental hygiene, preventive dental examinations or treatment by a dentist is taking thorough care for your teeth at your home. This is the most effective way of preventing the formation of tartar, dental caries and the occurrence of gingivitis.
Using a normal or an electric toothbrush is only the most basic care. “In addition to these, it is necessary to also use various tools to clean interdental areas. Toothbrushes are unable to clean these fully. In addition to dental floss and interdental brushes, other specialized tools are also available. The best way to go about this is to ask for advice from your dental hygienist or your dentist” says professional dental hygienist, Mahulena Stoklasová.
Focusing on children’s teeth
Some parents believe that baby teeth do not require that much care because they would fall out anyway. However, this is a misconception that can cause considerable complications in the dental cavity.
“Baby teeth need as much care as normal teeth. They are prone to decay and can cause the child unnecessary pain. The permanent teeth that develop below baby teeth can be damaged this way” warns dental hygienist Stoklasová. The permament teeth can therefore cut through with existing damage. That will then have to be repaired.
In case the baby tooth cannot be saved anymore, it is necessary to pull it out. “This will result in the premature loss of the tooth, resulting in the new tooth cutting through in the incorrect position. This would then require the use of braces or other orthodontic treatment to correct it” she explains.
Parents should have their child visit a dentist during the first year of age. While undergoing a preventive examination once every six months, plaque should be removed and the teeth polished with a special dental paste. “We recommend that children start going to a dental hygienist from the age of six to eight, twice each year” she concludes.
